The Roy Oswalt deal went through for the Phillies yesterday as they sent J.A. Happ along with Anthony Gose and Jonathan Villar to the Astros.

Gose was a key to the deal as the Astros immediately sent him to the Blue Jays for prospect Brett Wallace. Gose is a 19 year old outfielder with great speed and potential. Wallace was to be the Blue Jays future 1st baseman with Lyle Overbay being a free agent at seasons end.

Wallace was hitting .301 with 18 homers and 61 rbi’s in AAA and appears to be the heir apparent to Lance Berkman.

The Twins captured Matt Capps from the Nats for catcher Wilson Ramos. He was considered the Twins best trade prospect and impressed the team with his defense.

The Nats also received relief pitcher Joe Testa. With Capps being the closer, Jon Rauch will go back to setup duties.

The Padres scooped Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Pelzer is pitching AA and has not impressed too much. I’m not sure about the Orioles choice of prospects here.

The Rangers acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for pitcher Omar Poveda and relief pitcher Evan Reed. Reed has been pitching very well in AA. Poveda was the key to the deal. He had Tommy John surgery and won’t be available until next season. But he is a top of the line pitching prospect.

The Rangers sent Chris Davis back to AAA to make room for Cantu.

As Fantasy Baseball leagues begin the 2nd half of their seasons, managers have been looking at their rosters to determine if they can make any changes that will help them. One change that many may not see is adding Chris Davis.

Davis is the new 1st baseman for the Rangers, given that job when the Rangers traded Justin Smoak for Cliff Lee. Davis was hitting under .200 in April when the Rangers sent him to AAA and called up Smoak.

Don’t be surprised if Davis has a big 2nd half. He’s 24 years old and tore up AAA before his callup.

Davis has 2 big league seasons behind him. He hit .285 with 17 homers in 80 games as a rookie, Then He hit .238 with 21 homers in 113 games last year. Many thought this would be a break out year for him.

As is the case with many players, he needed a little more seasoning. But with how he hit in AAA this year, he must surely be ready.

Going unnoticed this past Sunday, Davis went 3-3 with a walk in 4 at-bats. Just the thing he needs to build confidence in himself. Davis plays 3rd base also. This makes him a very good pickup in Fantasy leagues that use corner infielders.

Davis should be available in most leagues. If he is, he could be a difference maker down the stretch.

Sundays activities lacked star power as many players were given the day off due to tomorrows’ All-Star game. But a day in baseball always has highlights.

All-Star David Ortiz hit his 18th home run and Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 20th save for the Red Sox.

Carl Crawford had a big day as he remains on a torrid pace, going 2-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI’s, a walk, a stolen base, and is now hitting .321. Evan Longoria went 3-4.

Alex Rios hit his 15th home run and is hitting .305. Carlos Quentin has gotten hot, hitting 2 home runs and 5 RBI’s. He now has 19 and 61 on the season.

New Rangers 1st baseman Chris Davis went 3-3 with a walk in his 4 at-bats.

Kurt Suzuki went 3-3 for the A’s as Trevor Cahill won and is now 9-3, 2.94 on the season.

Mark Teixeira went 4-5 and Casey Kotchman went 3-4 in the Yankees/Mariners matchup. C.C. Sabathia won and is now 12-3, 3.09 to tie for the AL lead in wins.

The Texas Rangers are probably done trading. Acquiring Cliff Lee boosted their starting rotation and they are no doubt out of money. Their quest for a big bat at 1st base is gone and they probably don’t need it, even with the departure of  Justin Smoak.

The Rangers have 3rd baseman Chris Davis who also plays 1st base. He was sent down to AAA this year but is back. He hit .354 with .403 OBP. He should be the prime candidate for the 1st base job. They could very well have the best hitting lineup in baseball, and now Lee is added to a young and very good pitching staff.

With Lee is  C.J. Wilson, Colby Lewis, Tommy Hunter, and Scott Feldman. Rich Harden will add to the mix once he returns from the DL. If  Nolan Ryan can keep this young staff intact, they will be a formidable foe the rest of the way. Adding Lee should have a very possitive affect on the other starters.

The Yankees thought they had Lee and lost him. They will be more aggressive the rest of the way. Other buying teams will see this progression and should also become aggressive to try and get their player.

With the All-Star break nearly upon us, the General Managers should be busy trying to make deals. There should be more breaking headlines in the coming days.

This appears to be a very interesting year for trading and the excitement of your team making a deal should keep you on the edge of your seat for the next few weeks.
