The Roy Oswalt deal went through for the Phillies yesterday as they sent J.A. Happ along with Anthony Gose and Jonathan Villar to the Astros.

Gose was a key to the deal as the Astros immediately sent him to the Blue Jays for prospect Brett Wallace. Gose is a 19 year old outfielder with great speed and potential. Wallace was to be the Blue Jays future 1st baseman with Lyle Overbay being a free agent at seasons end.

Wallace was hitting .301 with 18 homers and 61 rbi’s in AAA and appears to be the heir apparent to Lance Berkman.

The Twins captured Matt Capps from the Nats for catcher Wilson Ramos. He was considered the Twins best trade prospect and impressed the team with his defense.

The Nats also received relief pitcher Joe Testa. With Capps being the closer, Jon Rauch will go back to setup duties.

The Padres scooped Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Pelzer is pitching AA and has not impressed too much. I’m not sure about the Orioles choice of prospects here.

The Rangers acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for pitcher Omar Poveda and relief pitcher Evan Reed. Reed has been pitching very well in AA. Poveda was the key to the deal. He had Tommy John surgery and won’t be available until next season. But he is a top of the line pitching prospect.

The Rangers sent Chris Davis back to AAA to make room for Cantu.

The All-Star game is here, and it’s time for the general managers to get on the phone and start making deals. And there’s always something to talk about.

News that the Phillies may move Jayson Werth is highly unlikely. Catcher Carlos Ruiz is back, Placido Polanco will be back next weekend, and Chase Utley is on the horizen. The Phillies are coming off a 4 game sweep of the Reds and Werth will come around.

The Mets are always looking to buy someone, but the return of Carlos Beltran is getting all the attention in New York.

The Braves could use a good hitting outfielder and another starting pitcher.

The Marlins may have a slew of players available. Cantu, Nolasco, Uggla, Ross, and Leo Nunez could all be had.

Over in Nats Town, the stir is whether to cast off the veterans for more youth. The Nats could use another outfielder and have to address the middle infield.

The Rangers are done trading and the Athletics appear to be sitting pat and letting their youth continue to develop.

The Angels need to add solid bats or they will surely fall away from Texas.

The Mariners are sellers but don’t expect them to trade anymore pitching. Most likely candidates to be moved are Jose Lopez and Russell Branyan.

More tomorrow.

The trade rumors are heating up. More news from the front.

A message came my way that the Los Angeles Angels are showing interest in Tampa Bay Rays 1st baseman Carlos Pena. The Angels need someone at first and Pena would fit the bill. The free agent to be Pena is not hitting well and the Rays have replacements in their minor league system.

The big question is what will the Angels be willing to part with to get Pena?

Talking about Pena, he would also be a good fit in Texas. Any first baseman the Angels have interest in would also interest the Rangers. Throw Florida Marlins Jorge Cantu into the mix, and the activity begins to heat up. Cantu plays both first base and third base.

And with that, expect the Philadelphia Phillies to start bidding since their needs are 2nd and 3rd base, and Cantu plays 2nd as well. The Marlins always trade their free agents to be so expect Cantu to go to the highest bidder.
