Today at 4:00 pm EST is the trading deadline. We may see several more deals before it’s all over.

The Yankees have finally made a move acquiring Austin Kearns from the Indians. Kearns is a good hitting outfielder who can spell any of the regulars. Now the Yankees are about to acquire Lance Berkman from the Astros.

Berkman should have plenty left in him. This is an offseason but a trade to the Yankees could be just what he needs to get back to his old self. Both trades should be a big lift for the already powerful Yanks.

The Red Sox have been silent. Are they content to just wait for all their players to get healthy? It may be a while yet before Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury return to the lineup. Then a week or two to adjust. And then it may be too late. Don’t be surprised if the Sox pull something off at the last minute.

The Rays may be acquiring D-Backs closer Chad Qualls. Is this for real? Qualls is having as bad a season as anyone in baseball. He’s highly priced as well. He is a free agent at seasons end. He throws right-handed. What would the Rays want with him?

Whatever happens, the AL East has turned active at the last minute and may still surprise us. Stayed tuned, we will report on any and all deals as they occur.

The Roy Oswalt deal went through for the Phillies yesterday as they sent J.A. Happ along with Anthony Gose and Jonathan Villar to the Astros.

Gose was a key to the deal as the Astros immediately sent him to the Blue Jays for prospect Brett Wallace. Gose is a 19 year old outfielder with great speed and potential. Wallace was to be the Blue Jays future 1st baseman with Lyle Overbay being a free agent at seasons end.

Wallace was hitting .301 with 18 homers and 61 rbi’s in AAA and appears to be the heir apparent to Lance Berkman.

The Twins captured Matt Capps from the Nats for catcher Wilson Ramos. He was considered the Twins best trade prospect and impressed the team with his defense.

The Nats also received relief pitcher Joe Testa. With Capps being the closer, Jon Rauch will go back to setup duties.

The Padres scooped Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Pelzer is pitching AA and has not impressed too much. I’m not sure about the Orioles choice of prospects here.

The Rangers acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for pitcher Omar Poveda and relief pitcher Evan Reed. Reed has been pitching very well in AA. Poveda was the key to the deal. He had Tommy John surgery and won’t be available until next season. But he is a top of the line pitching prospect.

The Rangers sent Chris Davis back to AAA to make room for Cantu.
