The Roy Oswalt deal went through for the Phillies yesterday as they sent J.A. Happ along with Anthony Gose and Jonathan Villar to the Astros.

Gose was a key to the deal as the Astros immediately sent him to the Blue Jays for prospect Brett Wallace. Gose is a 19 year old outfielder with great speed and potential. Wallace was to be the Blue Jays future 1st baseman with Lyle Overbay being a free agent at seasons end.

Wallace was hitting .301 with 18 homers and 61 rbi’s in AAA and appears to be the heir apparent to Lance Berkman.

The Twins captured Matt Capps from the Nats for catcher Wilson Ramos. He was considered the Twins best trade prospect and impressed the team with his defense.

The Nats also received relief pitcher Joe Testa. With Capps being the closer, Jon Rauch will go back to setup duties.

The Padres scooped Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Pelzer is pitching AA and has not impressed too much. I’m not sure about the Orioles choice of prospects here.

The Rangers acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for pitcher Omar Poveda and relief pitcher Evan Reed. Reed has been pitching very well in AA. Poveda was the key to the deal. He had Tommy John surgery and won’t be available until next season. But he is a top of the line pitching prospect.

The Rangers sent Chris Davis back to AAA to make room for Cantu.

The All-Star game surprised all of us AL fans yesterday, as manager Charlie Manuel did prove to be quite a genious. Pulling his own Roy Halladay in the 6th inning was probably the decisive move. Now teams can look at a winning manager and decide what moves they need to make in the 2nd half run for the pennent.

We left off with the Minnesota Twins. They are faultering in the AL Central and are in need of a starting pitcher. What they would be willing to give up for a Ted Lily or Dan Haren remains to be seen.

Detroit is also in need of starting pitching. The bidding should be high as they may be competing for the same players.

Meanwhile, the hot Chicago White Sox don’t look like they need anyone. If they were to make a move, they may want to upgrade at DH to replace Mark Kotsay.

The Royals and Indians are going through a youth movement. Cleveland may have Travis Hafner available but the big prize would be if someone could pry away pitcher Faustas Carmona. The Royals  are known to be offering Jose Guillen but teams may rather bid on David DeJesus.

The Toronto Blue Jays finished the first half very disappointing, and are still looking at bringing up more youngsters. They have a talented team. Adam Lind and Lyle Overbay may be available as well as reliever Jason Frasor. Teams will surely be looking at other players but don’t expect the Jays to let anyone go cheap.

The Boston Red Sox are just waiting for all their star players to return, but they have to be looking at acquiring a big hitting outfielder, especially if the Yankees make a move.

The Yankees want a big starting pitcher. They may not get one. But the Yankees will surely do something. They always do.

The Tampa Bay Rays are a big question mark. Will they buy a big bat as they have made known to want? They have a lot of talent to offer any team for the right deal.

The Baltimore Orioles finished the first half strong and hope to continue their winning ways. 2nd baseman Brian Roberts will be returning soon and their young pitching staff is showing signs they are ready. With their season gone, the O’s may be willing to part with Miguel Tejada and Ty Wigginton. But don’t expect them to part with any of their young pitchers.
