The Roy Oswalt deal went through for the Phillies yesterday as they sent J.A. Happ along with Anthony Gose and Jonathan Villar to the Astros.

Gose was a key to the deal as the Astros immediately sent him to the Blue Jays for prospect Brett Wallace. Gose is a 19 year old outfielder with great speed and potential. Wallace was to be the Blue Jays future 1st baseman with Lyle Overbay being a free agent at seasons end.

Wallace was hitting .301 with 18 homers and 61 rbi’s in AAA and appears to be the heir apparent to Lance Berkman.

The Twins captured Matt Capps from the Nats for catcher Wilson Ramos. He was considered the Twins best trade prospect and impressed the team with his defense.

The Nats also received relief pitcher Joe Testa. With Capps being the closer, Jon Rauch will go back to setup duties.

The Padres scooped Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for pitcher Wynn Pelzer. Pelzer is pitching AA and has not impressed too much. I’m not sure about the Orioles choice of prospects here.

The Rangers acquired Jorge Cantu from the Marlins for pitcher Omar Poveda and relief pitcher Evan Reed. Reed has been pitching very well in AA. Poveda was the key to the deal. He had Tommy John surgery and won’t be available until next season. But he is a top of the line pitching prospect.

The Rangers sent Chris Davis back to AAA to make room for Cantu.

Roy Oswalt is a great pitcher. He is available in trade right now. He wants to play for a winner. And if the Astros eat most of his salary, every contending team can afford to make an offer for him. And every contending team will want him.

Houston will make a deal for the right players, major league ready young players that they can use to build a future winning team. Not every contender has those players.

Oswalt will help any team win a pennant. He is in his 10th season and will turn 33 years old in August. He is still in the prime of his career.

Oswalt is 143-80, 3.22 lifetime. He is a 2 time 20 game winner. He has never had a losing season until now. He is 6-10, 3.08 on a very bad team. On a good team he surely would have been an All-Star again. So who gets the prize?

It would be highly unlikely that the trading deadline comes and goes without Oswalt changing uniforms. There should be plenty of teams making offers. Houston would probably only be reluctant to trade to a team in their own division. That leaves plenty of contenders in need of a good starting pitcher.

The team that lands Oswalt will have the upper hand on their division rivals. And it’s possible you’ll see him this year in the World Series, winning it all for his new team.

Who will land the prize?

Cliff Lee is causing a stir. Or is it the Rangers have caused a stir?

The Los Angeles Dodgers were in the Cliff Lee race. Apparently they have no minor leaguers that are major league ready. When the Mariners asked for Billingsley and Loney, the deal fell through. The Dodgers are still looking for a pitcher, whether a starter or reliever.

The Diamond backs may not be sellers as many think. They have a farm system that is a mess, so anyone looking for one of their players will have to offer a lot with prospects. Dan Harens’ name keeps popping up, but he is the ace of the D-Backs staff and has a huge contract.

The Giants showed interest in Cory Hart of the Brewers, but the Brewers wanted pitcher Jonathan Sanchez in return and the Giants balked.

The Brewers may be sellers. Though the team is not talking, Cory Hart has been persued by the Braves for some time. And wouldn’t the Red Sox like a right-handed power hitter like Hart?

Rumors are flying that Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder are available. Fielder would look good in a Rays uniform.

Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt should get some attention now that Cliff Lee is off the market. Oswalt’s recent start had officials from the Phillies, Mets, Twins, Dodgers, and Rays on hand. No news of anything yet on him.

Trade Rumors

It’s July and the trade rumors are heating up.

It’s heard around town that the Boston Red Sox may be in pursuit of Kansas City Royals outfielder David DeJesus.  DeJesus is having a big season and the Red Sox could use a big bat in their injury riddled outfield.

The Rangers are making no qualms about their quest for a starting pitcher. The Mets and Twins may also be looking for pitching. Names being thrown out there are Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt. Carlos Zambrano may go into the mix if the Cubs are willing to eat most of his very large contract.

Jeremy Guthrie and Ty Wigginton of the Orioles have been looked at by the Rangers. And I thought I overheard someone say that Ted Lilly is available.

The Adam Dunn rumors have begun. He will be a free agent at the end of this season. It’s been heard that the White Sox and the Angels have interest in the slugger. With Kendry Morales out for the season, I can see the Angels making a serious bid for him.

And some surprising news. Pitcher Mark Prior, who has been out of baseball for more then 2 years due to arm trouble, is making a pitching performance in front of scouts in hope that he will be signed by a major league team. The interest will be high. But seldom do these workouts do much for ex-players.
